The ending of Hamlet is very famous for it’s quantity of bloodshed. In all of this mess, is justice served?

Mr. Sullivan, my 12th grade English teacher, made us dress up in Burger King crowns and sword fight with paper towel tubes to make sense of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Here at the American School in Guadalajara we are going to use the internet instead. In the posts below, follow us as we seek to understand why this really is the greatest play in the English language.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, justice is served at the end of the play because everyone that died actually deserved to die. Claudius died because he killed his own brother and married his brother's wife. Gertrude died because she betrayed his husband and son by marrying Claudius two months after he husband's death.
Laertes died because he really wanted to kill Hamlet and at the end he achieved it. And finally Hamlet died because he caused the death of every single character in the play. So in conclusion, justice was served but not in the way as Hamlet or the audience expected.
I think that the characters death is justified. They all did some sort of evil deed at some point throuought the play. But, the fact that they did wrong does not jutify death because there are infact people still breathing that have done far worse. But honestly, death doesnt have to be justified, when its your time its your time regardless of what you have done or havent done. The fact that they diddie is all the reason/explanation we need.

I don't think justice was served because dying can be much better than staying alive and not having a clear consiense. Hamlet shouldn´t have killed claudius but instead throw him in a jail or some place where he can think of all the wrong things he did and probably go crazy. I don't think death is the answer for justice, justice is done when the person is alive to suffer the consequences. but what i do believe is that hamlet died thinking that his actions were justified and that's probably what matters the most because his belief of justice was revenge.

I think justice in the last scene was really served. Weather it is good or bad to serve justice in that way its totally different. I think that the main reason why justice was served was because the king and Gertrude were killed, in my opinion those two characters were the most problematic in all the play. I also think justice was served for some other characters that maybe did not need that punishment like Hamlet and Leartes and even more important Sir.Osric, but I do understand that without the death of those characters specially Hamlet it would not be a tragedy so it is completely understandable why justice was served in such a high dose even for the ones that did not need it as much.

I think that justice wasn´t served completly, since Claudiu´s death was very quick, but it still fair. Hamlet´s death wasn´t fair because he had to be the king. And at the end of all this mess, they lost the country. I do like the end, it is great, how everything ends with the conquenst of Denmark, but better, with the fall of the satue, it is excellent.
In my opinion after all this bloodshed, justice was served. Each character that died, died for a reason, and they deserved this death. Hamlet died to show that vengeance leads no where but death. Claudius also had his deserved death after killing his brother for power. Laertes also died because of vendetta, and Gertrude because of her dishonor to her previous husband Hamlet. Even so, there were some unfair deaths such as Ophelia who was subject to harsh treatment, or Osric.

in the ending of Hamlet during the last scene i totally agree that justice was served. although it wasnt a typical happy ending.those who died they diserved it becausee they caused lots of conflincts during the play. so i think they are paying for all of what they did. all the damage they caused.

Yes justice was finally served. Hamlet had his final revenge over Claudous. Althou stilll many died but it was just that plans didnt went that well. The main basic idea is that claudious was killed infronnt of many people and he died like he sopose to die and hamlet is doing well because he died in peace and Leartes had his justice over Hamlet and FortnBrass as well.

I think that justice was served. Everyone who had ever wronged anyone died, and Hamlet did have his revenge over Claudius. I think that maybe it wasn't necessary for Robin Williams character to die ( i forgot his name), because he really hadn't done anything wrong to anyone and he was just collateral damage. Besides that, i think justice is completely served, there is no peaceful way for this play to end except the way it did and so i think that Shakespeare did a good job ending the play the way he did no matter how brutal it was. It was almost like it had to be done.

Hamlets ending shows us how justice was not served. I mean, you can see it from a point of view in which you think that death is the solution, then yes, justice arrived. But I dont think so, because everybody just died and there is nobody who can celebrate justice. Even though everybody did some kind of evil during the play, death is not the way for solving problems. :)
