Summarize the advice Polonius gives to his son Laertes. Does he seem wise or a foolish? Does it remind you of any advice your parents or grandparents have ever given you?

Mr. Sullivan, my 12th grade English teacher, made us dress up in Burger King crowns and sword fight with paper towel tubes to make sense of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Here at the American School in Guadalajara we are going to use the internet instead. In the posts below, follow us as we seek to understand why this really is the greatest play in the English language.
Yes, it does remind me about an advice that my father gave me once about piercings. He told me that they look vulgar and what people will think about him will be that he was a bad father that can’t educate his daughter well, so he ask me not have more because of the impression he was going to give just like Polonius. :)

The advise that Polonius gave to Ofelia reminds me to one that my mom gave me onece about the importance of behavior. She told me that a good behavior always was good for someone, that people would think good about you and you would be accepted in any place. She also told me that dressing well was also important, since people would think good things about you.

ReplyDeleteThe advices given in these scenes in Hamlet are really alike the ones we recieve every once in a while but with not that important meaning like marriage in Hamlet. Very often my mom tells me to behace, to be carefull with who are my friends, to be carefull with alcohol and to dont do nothing stupid. Especially to avoid any life changing accident that can really damage you phisically, mentaly and emotionally but they are just ways to prevent minor things. But the real thing is that no one can take care of me more than I can do for myself so they aren't that meaninfull at this age. They can only help you when they tell you about more important desicions like college, mariage and kids.
THATS REAL TALKING RIGHT THURRRRR!

Yes my mom is alwayss telling me that appearances are very important. First impressions are the most important, because once some one has made their mind up about you it is very hard for them to see you in a different light.

I have gotten many different lessons like the ones Polonius was preaching. I have been told to make sure not to dress like a "clown", to always dress nice and be "presentable". I also have been taught not to get accustomed to borrowing money in any way, because it creates debt and problems in the future. My dad still gets mad when my brother uses his credit card too much. I believe that some of Polonius' advice was definitely wise and can come to great use, but i also think the "advice" he gave to Ophelia was terrible, because its not about him, it's about what she wants and when she is happy.

The advice that polonius gave to Leartes did not sound anythig foolish to me, I have gotten some similar type of advice from my parents. Some of that advise is about how to chose a friend, how to respect myself and others and how to use my money They have also thought me how to behave when I am in another place and some tips to adapt easily ( they told me that when I went to study for one year to Canada)

ReplyDeleteThe advice Polonius gives to his son Laertes reminds of an advice that my mom gives very often. She tells that if I find a very good friend I should keep him and don't let him go away because there are not many real friends in the world. She also tells me to choose my friends wisely and to keep the nad friendship away.
Well, like everybody I guess, since an early age I have been educated and adviced by both of my parents, just like Polonious did with Laertes. Polonious seems to be wise when it comes to advise, because it looks like hecares more for Laertes than for himself. Ive been given many advices which actually help me in all kinds of situations, and I was able to relate myself with Laertes ad the one being lectured upon.

The advice that Polonius gave his son Laertes reminded me a lot of the advice that my parents give me regarding friendships and appearance. A very common phrase said by them is, "choose your friends wisely" in other words be careful who you hang out with because appearances can be deceiving. Although they might be friendly on the outside, over a long period they could induce you to do things which in the future could lead to trouble, such as fighting, stealing etc. My father also says to dress appropriatley because by wearing peircings or flashy clothing the only thing i'm doing is grabbing attention as well as making the family look bad.

This piece of advise reminded me of my mother, "those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, grapple them unto thy soul with hoops of steel". What my mom tells me is that having friends is really important and that the real friends i make in high school are the friends that i will have for the rest of my life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with her, eventhoug i know i will make new friends when i'm out of school i think the ones i have made in high school will be a big part of my life for a long time.

The advice given by Polonius to his beloved daughter Ophelia reminded me of what my mother makes me promise everytime I leave my house. She makes me promise that i will behave well without drinking because if i do one of those things the impression from other would not be nice and then my reputation would go low. So every piece of advice that our superiors tell us are right because they have live longer and have more experience in life.

Yes my I really think she cares allot about her because it can affect him and her, My father always gives me advice in life. He always wants the best for me and talks about a great feuture that he spects about me that I will become a great business man or a doctro.

Indeed. Most people don't want to accept it, but your success and most possibly, your life, will depend on what people think about you. Appearance is very important and I've heard my father tell me this countless times.

What Polonius said to his both son's reminds me of many times that my parents have placed myself in that position. Often I hear my parents tell me that I must choose my friends wisely, that I should dress nicely and not call to much attention. I try to listen to them but not entirely, I guess back in Hamlet's days they really did have to obbey.
